Silanos são estruturas moleculares compostas por um átomo de silício central, dois ou três grupos hidrolisáveis e um grupo orgânico principal. Os grupos hidrolisáveis têm a capacidade de reagir com superfícies inorgânicas, ricas em hidroxilas, enquanto que o grupo orgânico principal normalmente é compatível com resinas e materiais orgânicos, como poliéster, acrílico e olefinas, entre outros. Por isso os silanos são usados para fazer ligações químicas entre um produto orgânico e inorgânico, conferindo maior adesão a selantes, adesivos, tintas e vernizes a diversas superfícies, além de promover compatibilização de fibra de vidro em compósitos, cargas minerais em elatômeros, entre outras aplicações.
